In-depth unstructured interviews are best described
as a structured conversation between two people –
the moderator and the subject.
Such a conversation always takes place on a specific topic, and its main goal is to deepen information or gain completely new knowledge about a phenomenon.
ITI is a remote version of the in-depth interview technique (conducted by telephone or via instant messaging).
This technique has a wide range of applications: it is used not only in social research but also in evaluation, opinion and attitude research, and consumer research.
Thanks to ITI, we can reach respondents from all over the world and relatively quickly obtain detailed information that is usually difficult to collect using quantitative techniques.
In-depth interviews are particularly important when examining new phenomena (so-called exploratory research), based on comprehensive and in-depth analysis. Moreover, by conducting a “live” conversation, we can explore interesting topics and threads that arise during the interview for the first time, which were not anticipated at the stage of creating the script.
The basis of a well-designed ITI study is a refined interview scenario. This scenario may be more structured (a specific list of questions to be asked to the respondent) or less specific (merely indicating areas for discussion).
In the case of exploratory research, the moderator often only has a list of topics for discussion with the respondent— the conversation and subsequent questions develop during the interview. The role of the moderator is extremely important here, as they deepen interesting topics during the discussion or introduce entirely new ones that were not anticipated at the script creation stage.
In some cases, it is beneficial to create a ready-made research scenario— a list of questions prepared for the respondent. This approach is most often used in studies where specific goals and research questions have already been established.
An ITI interview, i.e., an in-depth telephone interview or one conducted via instant messaging, is a more effective and cost-efficient solution than a direct IDI interview, as it allows for quicker access to the interviewee and adapts to their availability.
Such interviews can also be conducted with individuals living anywhere in the world, meaning there are virtually no spatial limitations. Before starting the study, the research coordinator recruits participants who meet the established criteria (e.g., individuals up to 20 years old, living in Opole). The coordinator then arranges the interview with the moderator at a time and place convenient for the participant.
Regardless of whether we conduct an ITI or IDI study, each interview is either recorded (to prepare a transcription) and/or a moderator’s note is created, summarizing the most important issues discussed during the interview. If a transcript is produced from the interview, it is subsequently coded using a program specifically designed for this purpose.
A study conducted using the ITI technique may have various goals and assumptions. Below are examples of how ITI interviews can be applied in research.
- Opinion survey (e.g., customers, as well as residents and project recipients)
- Research on attitudes (e.g., young people’s perspectives on new products)
- Evaluation study (e.g., research involving a group of experts, contractors, and beneficiaries)
- Consumer research (opinion research regarding a specific product or service)
The in-depth interview technique is the most widely used method in research and can be effectively applied across various projects.
To date, we have had the opportunity to work with various institutions and companies interested in obtaining statistics in specific areas. The research conducted was aimed at helping them advance their plans and attract new clients.

FAQ
These are individual in-depth interviews that involve a conversation between two people: an experienced moderator who guides the discussion and asks questions, and a respondent, who may also be an expert in a particular field. The purpose of the interview is to explore particular issues more deeply or to gain entirely new insights from a specific area (expert interviews).
The acronym ITI stands for In-Depth Telephone Interview.
An ITI interview resembles a remote (telephone or online) conversation between two people on a specific topic, with the moderator playing a crucial role in creating a friendly and trusting atmosphere while also encouraging the respondent to elaborate on their responses.
The ITI technique is particularly well-suited for exploratory research, as well as consumer studies and research on attitudes and opinions.
Typically, these interviews last between 60 and even 100 minutes.
One key advantage of this type of interview is that it provides access to insights that can be challenging to obtain through other methods. The information gathered from ITI studies helps answer the question “why?”—setting this technique apart from other quantitative methods, like CATI. Plus, the ITI technique is also cost-effective.
