Stationary survey on computer (CAPI)
CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interview) research
involves face-to-face interviews with respondents
using laptops.
Such an interviews are conducted based on a previously prepared questionnaire.
The respondents’ answers are automatically saved in the system.
Different types of questions can be used in the CAPI survey:
- closed (i.e., questions with provided answers),
- semi-open (open questions with an option to enter your own answer),
- completely open (i.e., with the possibility of entering only the respondent’s answer),
- multiple and single-choice questions, as well as questions with a scale (e.g., five-point, where 1 means definitely no, and 5 means definitely yes).
The computer program displays the questions in the correct order. The interviewer’s task is to read the displayed question and possible answers, then select the response chosen by the respondent using the mouse (touch pad) or to enter answers for open or semi-open questions using the keyboard.
The CAPI technique, like any quantitative method, is based on a standardized (identical for all respondents) questionnaire.
Thanks to the results collected using the CAPI technique — similar to other quantitative techniques — we can compare different groups of respondents and identify potential differences (e.g., the responses of younger and older individuals).
These studies are particularly important whenever it is necessary to diagnose an action or phenomenon, as well as to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of certain activities, brand recognition, product recognition, etc.
The research results are presented in numbers or percentages, allowing conclusions to be conveyed in an accessible and transparent manner (e.g., in charts, infographics). Moreover, such studies can be repeated, and the results can be compared each time (e.g., to track changes over time) because the questionnaire is fully standardized.
The CAPI study begins with designing a questionnaire (commonly referred to as a survey).
The prepared questionnaire is then entered into the ICT system (a specialized program) where a script is created to facilitate the implementation of the study in the CAPI format. This tool, once integrated into the system, is meticulously checked by us (mainly concerning the so-called transition rules, which dictate the sequence of completing the survey). Thanks to this two-stage verification process, we are 100% confident that the survey is correctly constructed.
Next, the field research phase begins – interviewers meet in person with selected respondents and conduct interviews, recording their answers. The respondents’ answers are automatically saved in the system. During the study, strict oversight of the interviewers’ work is maintained.
We also check the result database of the study (the correctness of transitions, and the accuracy of saved answers).
A study conducted using the CAPI technique may have various goals and assumptions.
It can be successfully used in any type of research.
The CAPI study allows you to create both simple statistics and complex analyses.
CAPI is most often used in consumer opinion research, market research, or social research.
The CAPI study is also used to research brand recognition or purchasing preferences.
The undeniable strengths of the CAPI technique, like other techniques in quantitative methods, include:
- the possibility of comparing results obtained in different study groups since the questionnaire is the same within a single study (or one subpopulation),
- the ability to present research results in an accessible and visually appealing way (e.g., in charts and infographics).
To date, we have had the opportunity to work with various institutions and companies interested in obtaining statistics in specific areas. The research conducted was aimed at helping them advance their plans and attract new clients.

FAQ
CAPI refers to an individual interview conducted remotely between the interviewer and the respondent, based on a questionnaire entered into an information technology system. During the interview, the interviewer carefully reads the questions and available responses (or matches the respondent’s answers to those displayed on the computer screen) and then records the responses in the system. The results of this research are automatically saved on secure servers.
The acronym CAPI stands for Computer-Assisted Personal Interview.
A CAPI interview involves a conversation between the interviewer and the respondent. The interviewer reads the questions and responses (or matches the respondent’s answers to the available options) and records those indicated by the respondent in the information technology system. The results are saved in real-time on secure servers.
CAPI interviews can be effectively utilized in a wide range of studies, although they are most commonly employed in commercial or consumer research.
Typically, these interviews last anywhere from a few minutes to around fifteen minutes.
One significant advantage of CAPI is its high effectiveness in conducting research while maintaining a strong degree of reliability. The results of CAPI research, presented in a quantitative manner, are both engaging and clear.
